PERDÓNAME, FÖRLÅT

A FILM BY

DIEGO MONSIVÁIS GARCÍA

Having grown in Mexico and now living in Sweden, being son to a Mexican father and to a Swedish mother, Dan is struggling to find his place in life and defining who he wants to be. Music, romance and heartbreaks are the main ingredients in this young-love story.

We are currently in the development phase of this project. Further down you can watch a little test scene we shot to start shaping the tone and aesthetics of the film.

The Director's vision

Love. We all have – one way or the other – a relationship to it. Whether it is for our parents, a friend, our cat or a crush, love is a pinhole through which we can have a look at the way we percieve life, our desires and ourselves. Love makes us the happiest and the most miserable. And it is exaclty that, love's irrefutible ability to move us, that fuels this story. Love inPerdóname, förlåtis a pretext to talk about the desire (or necessity) to define ourselves, to become somebody and about how people around us – people who many times indeed love us – feel an urge to change us to better fit their own needs and ideas.

Dan, as young as he is, represents, then, that side of us that is more malleable and susceptible to external influences – influences that ultimately keeps us from becoming, or remaining, free.

The setting

An important aspect of the film is the time of the year. The story is set in the Swedish summer, with its long sun hours and bright nights. In Sweden, summer is that time of the year when people feel more socially stimulated. To some, summer can even feel a little too hectic and overwhelming. For this reason, Swedish summer is the perfect setting for this story. Dan, who grew up in Mexico City, feels asphyxiated by the never-ending urge of his surroundings to always be active, always act upon, never taking a break and reflect upon what is being felt and experienced.

The priducers' vision

HANNAH AURELL HANSSON

For me,Perdóname, förlåthighlights the diversity of assets we bring as individuals, acknowledging that we humans are different and bring various ingredients to the table. The existence of differences among people is neither strange nor inherently negative; diversity is a part of being human. Problems arise when we start to value different qualities, cultures, and gender identities as either superior or inferior. Differences per se are not a problem, but sometimes are used as scapegoats in different social contexts. This film tells a story about how identifying with two different cultures can be an asset. This narrative of integration and diversity is new to me and is a storyline that I believe is missing in mainstream cinema.

JONNA EVE ERIKSSON

In my work, representation and inclusion are two core values. Therefore, I find it interesting to contribute to a project that aims to make the audience view identity and diversity through a refreshing new narrative. My hope is that the film can contribute to creating a new dialogue around identity for young people. I aim to contribute to giving this film a long life that extends beyond film festivals and streaming services – the potential for the impact we can make with the film is, I believe, very significant.
